Personal safety

Personal safety includes taking measures to avoid, prevent or resolve any situations where one’s safety is under a threat.

Personal safety involves three stages:

  1. Foresee, prevent and avoid: a mindful evaluation of potential risks in any forthcoming situation, such as on a night out or a simple walk through Kelvingrove park late at night. An example of the suggested framework stage would be: quick check of a route back to home from a party (or a taxi pre-booked in advance) and an evaluation of how safe the areas on that route would be.
  2. Act: an action taken to resolve the situation at the very moment it is happening. In this case, it would be useful to know basic behavior rules offered by the UofG Krav Maga Society or any other psychological and self-defence techniques, such as ones offered by Police Scotland. It is important to not make the situation worse- if one thinks they could resist the threat and are being 100% sure (if, for example, the robber is physically weaker and does not have any weapon on them)
  3. Resolve: if any unfavorable situation happens, a robbery in our framework example, make sure to report the crime to Police, or turn to GP or ambulance if any physical harm has been received. The action taken to resolve any situation must be timely, in best case scenario immediate.

Contact information and other helpful resources

Police Scotland contact phone numbers: In an emergency call 999 / for non-emergencies call 101.

Useful GUSRC safe taxi scheme: In partnership with Glasgow Taxis, the SRC has implemented the safe taxi scheme. This is a safety initiative to ensure that even if you’re alone and have found yourself stuck on a night out with no money, you can still make it back home safely by using your student card as payment in emergency situations.

All it consists of are these three simple steps:

  1. Call 0141 429 7070, quoting ‘Get Home Safe’ and ‘GU1’, and give the operator your Surname and GUID. Always be sure to check that the registration on the cab matches the one you have received in your message from the taxi firm.
  2. Once you arrive home, sign the driver’s receipt and hand over your student card as payment.
  3. Wait 24 hours and come and collect your student card from the SRC Welcome Point and pay for your taxi fare.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got your student card — you can still use this scheme to get home. Ring 0141 429 7070, quoting ‘Get Home Safe’ and ‘GU1’ explaining that you have no student card and ask for the operator on the line to contact the University Gatehouse (0141 330 4282), who will then be able to confirm your student status. Once confirmed the taxi will be sent to pick you up.
